A database is easy to fill and slow to clean. Two settings decide what ends up in yours, and both are cheap to get right now and expensive to unpick a year from now.

This page gathers the articles that settle those decisions. They live in the Setup Guide section of this knowledge base, and cover what to choose and why. The rest of this section covers how to do it.

1. What should I read before I build my database?

• How does screening decide which profiles land in my database? When to add a profile automatically, when to add it at the end of onboarding, and why manual adding is the option people forget to run.
• Profile tags or custom fields? Tags carry logic and gate what people can see. Custom fields are inert data. Picking the wrong one is the mistake almost everybody makes once.
• Reports, custom views and Manage fields How to save a column layout as a named view, and the trap where rearranging without saving quietly changes the default for your Active and Archived lists.

2. Why are those articles somewhere else?
