The Course sequence step in Vome

What is the Course step type in a sequence?

Info
Plan required: Courses are available on the Enterprise and Ultimate plans. On a lower plan the Course tile still appears in the step picker, but it shows a lock and opens an upgrade prompt instead of adding a step.

Overview

The Course step attaches one of your published Vome courses to a sequence. The user takes the course inside Vome, their score comes back to the step, and you decide whether the course has to be passed before they can move on.

1. What is the Course step?

It is a pointer to a course you have already built and published in your Courses module, plus the rules for how strictly that course gates the sequence. The course itself, with its lessons and its pass mark, is built in the course builder rather than on the step.

2. How do I add one?

  1. Open Sequences in the left-hand navigation and open the sequence you are building.

  2. Click + Add a step.

  3. Choose Courses.

  4. Under Select a course, search for and select the course you want. Only published courses appear here, so if the list is empty you will see No published courses available and need to publish the course first.

  5. Optionally set a Custom title and a description, choose the completion requirement, then confirm.

3. What are the completion requirement options?

Under Completion requirement you get three choices:

  • Optional, never blocks. The course is optional. Users can continue to the next step whether or not they take it or pass it.

  • Expected, but never blocks. The course is expected but does not block. Use this when the course matters but should not hold up the sequence.

  • Must pass to continue. Users cannot move to the next step until they pass. This is the default.

The setting only controls blocking. Results are always saved in the course itself either way, so choosing Optional does not mean you lose the record of who took it and what they scored.

4. What does Minimum score do?

It sets the score, as a percentage, that counts as a pass for this step. It is optional, and it overrides the course's own pass threshold.

Caution
A minimum score beats the course's own pass mark: if the course passes at 70 and you set 90 on the step, the step wants 90. The same course can therefore be a harder requirement in one sequence than in another, which is useful on purpose but surprising if you have forgotten you set it.

5. Does the course expire?

That is decided in the course, not on the step. The step shows you the answer under Course expiry: either the expiry the course carries, or This course does not expire. To change it, edit the course in the course builder.

6. What does the user see?

The user sees the course title, the description, what the completion requirement means for them, their own status and score, and a View course button that opens the course player. When they finish, they are returned to the sequence.

7. How does the step get marked complete?

Automatically. The step completes once the course is completed, and passed where a pass mark or a minimum score applies. There is nothing for you to tick by hand.

8. Can linked sites use the same course?

Yes. Linked sites can see the course under their Sequences tab, so one course built centrally can be used across your sites.

Summary

  • Courses require the Enterprise or Ultimate plan.

  • Only published courses can be added to a step.

  • The completion requirement controls blocking only, never whether results are saved.

  • Must pass to continue is the default, and a minimum score overrides the course pass mark.

  • Expiry comes from the course, and completion is automatic.
